server transfer questions about database

Hi I have the instruction for the server transfer but I am a little confused. I have a new SQL database on the new server and the old database files is already in it.

now when I install to the new server and I get to the page to put in the database info, should I insert the new info here at this point? The istructions tell me to "use the same db prefix as the old site (I'm not sure what that was) I'd like to install the demo stuff for testing first. Does that mean I have to put in something besides my current mySql and then put in the sql later?

Also, the old server had phpMyAdmin in the contol panel but I have no access to any controls on the new server. How do I access phpMyAdmin for the new one?

You need to decide what will be contained in this DB you previous data or the demo data???

If you previous data alter the sequence - install Zem Cart first - then replace the DB and miught have to re-run install BUT only the DB upgrade part depending upon versions.

You might consider another install with just the demo data as there are many examples that can tutor you.

phpmyadmin is not part of Zen Cart and your host should have a method for account management and if tyhey do not - run don't walk to another host that does as these are "BASIC" items necessary to operate a successful business.

thanks for responding...here is what I want to do..

Install new version with and add my old database to it LATER after the cart is up and working.

When I install and get to the database page what do I put it it to start? The new mySQL settings I've created?

Look at the configure.php for your "old" site find this and observe what if any prefix is used

A quick painless way is to install the DB backup utility add on from this site on the old site and the new. Backup the old, then copy the old site backup to new site in the same directory; then restore the old to the new.

OK I've go the new cart installed and I've made backups of the 2 configure.php to my hard drive. I am ready to copy over the old site to the new site. QUestion, and I think this screwed me up before.
My old site admin is called admin1.
If I copy admin 1 to admin it will give me 2 admins on the new site.
Should I just rename admin 1 to admin and let Dreamwever update ths links and then copy the whole thing over? Then replace the configs?

Is this an upgrade or a move using the same version of the files?

Normally, only the DB is applied and a few of your template specific files. Not all the files from your previous install. If a version upgrade then your template files need to be "merged" if they are on the change log as having been updated

First off thank you so much for your persistant help. This is just a move to a new server. I have a series of instructions from the ZENCARThelp that tell me to overwrite the all the files on the new server with all the old ones and then use the NEW configs.

It would make sense to just transfer over specific files and the configs.

Is there a comprehensive list of which ones I would need?

If this is just a move to a new server you do not even have to install Zen Cart from scratch.....

Just upload your backed up files, create a database and note the DB name(it might be different on a new server) upload your DB backup to it, edit your 2 configure.php files to correct any path, naming & password changes...that should be all that is required

But, if you DO make a clean install, then Zen Cart builds the correct contents of the new configure.php files FOR YOU ... so you don't have to come back here asking for which settings to change to what values, and go around in circles for hours playing the guessing game.
That's why the FAQ article says to install it clean and preserve the configure.php files.

As to everything else, a straight copy-and-replace is likely fine.

Again, follow the FAQ article, as it also addresses database-related steps.
