Sub category names in centre column

Is there a way (other than having no name for them) of removing the category and sub-category names from the centre column?

We want to leave JUST the category images and have them all stack together vertically as the links to the appropriate product section on our site.

We do want to leave the category and subcategory links in the left sidebar as an 'ever present' navigation system though.

Looking at the several other threads raising this issue it looks as if it is only curable by some code alterations in a php file, and as I am completely new to php any suggestions will have to be expressed pretty clearly I'm afraid.

Further to our post above, it seems as if there ought to be a way to achieve the effect we want in the Admin panel under:
Configuration/Product Info/Previous Next - Navigation Includes Category Name and Image Status
as there are currently three controls here:

0=Category Name and Image always show
1=Category Name only
2=Category Name and Image when not blank

We think there ought to additionally be:
3=Category Image only

and then we could have just images in the centre column and not the Category names as well.

Anybody got any idea if we can write a new bit of code somewhere to add this to our choices in the Admin area? Or is it just not that simple?

Further to the post above, this actually wouldn't sort out our problem, because this would only affect the Product Info pages.

The pages we want to remove category headings from are Product Listing.
