Attributes problem

I have added a free gift for my clients to choose when they place an order. However I just want them to have the option to choose one free gift. The problem is that when they order multiple items they get the option to pick one free gift for every item they ordered and not per order. So if if someone orders 3 items they are getting 3 gifts, which I don't want. How do I block the ability to do this??
