Is there any way to assign a product or a certain quantity of products to an individual customer?

For example, a customer wants to purchase an item but it's out of stock. When that item gets back in stock I'd like only the customer that wanted it to be able to see and purchase that product when they log in, not for it to appear on the site so anyone can buy it.

The reason I ask is we have lots of customers pre-ordering products and it's a nightmare to ensure that they get the stock they want without someone else grabbing it first.

Forgive me if this is an obvious thing to set up as it's get me stumped!
