Shipping Confusion

I have done quite a bit of design work in Zen Cart but this problem has always puzzled me, and now it is essential that I solve this for a client. The client wants to offer free shipping within the US on SOME items and USPS calculated shipping on ALL items sent internationally. The free shipping option does not work, of course, because of the "Always free shipping" clause which blocks those products from being purchased by anyone outside the zone, even if other shipping options are turned on. I understand that setting up zones may work (Defining zone one as US with 0.00 shipping, Zone 2 as international with X.XX shipping) but it seems like there is no way to run it through the USPS module. Does anyone have any idea how I might go about this?

What distinguishes the Free Shipping items for the US?

Always Free Shipping is designed for Free Shipping to Everyone ...

You may be needing some customizing to get this to work correctly based on your description ...

There is nothing that distinguishes them. The one thing I dislike about Zen Cart, the only thing that I do not love about it, are the shipping modules. It is very user unfriendly. Typically, one would expect to be able to assign per item shipping per item, rather than all items. One would also think that "Free Shipping!" would not override other shipping modules, especially outside the defined zone. The easiest approach would be to revamp the "Free Shipping Options" module to include a zone condition.

I have resigned myself to the fact that there is no easy solution so I am going to try to persuade the customer to go with another approach. If anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear them.

I bashed my head against the wall for weeks trying to resolve customised shipping, then contacted Conor Kerr (conor).
