    help question CPU Usages

I have been confronted by my hosting provider with them saying my site is using too much CPU resources. I recently added a RSS Export script, which I had to disable for now until I can get an upgraded version of the script that uses caching. However, now that my host has flagged my site they still say my normal installation of Zen Cart is using too much resourced. Here is the 3 lines they included in their report to me:

    Top Process %CPU 54.0 /usr/local/php5/bin/php-cgi /home/swiker2/public_html/values-galore/index.php
    Top Process %CPU 47.0 /usr/local/php5/bin/php-cgi /home/swiker2/public_html/values-galore/index.php
    Top Process %CPU 46.0 [php-cgi]
I have the following things also installed:

    • Cherry Zen Template
    • Hover Box 3
    • CAPTCHA
    • Super Orders
    • Super Tracker
    • Google Base Feeder
    • Testimonial Manager
    • Easy Populate Advanced
    • Social Bookmarks Supercharged
    • Tag Cloud
    • Translation

That's about all. If anyone has some thoughts on what might be causing this high CPU usage, please let me know.

I have been told that switching to a Virtual Private Server would give me a lot more CPU resources in which I can use. Any thoughts on this?

... and which host tried to upsell you?
Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

    Fat Guy in AZ,

Have you read the TOS for your "unlimited" plan?

My suggestion would be a new host - yes one that "limits" bandwidth and file storage, and one that is structured to work with Zencart.

Lunar Pages is my current host and has been 100% perfect for years. They were the ones that are trying to "upsell" me.

I hate to switch hosts when the one I have has, as I mentioned above, always been wonderful. However, as you said, a host that is structured to work with Zen Cart may be the only solution. I surely am NOT looking forward to dishing out close to $400/year for a VPS when I can get away with a 1/4 of that with a host designed for Zen Cart customers.

I checked out the link at the top of this forum for Certified Hosts - so maybe I should look deeper at that list. Would there be any recommendations for me for Zen Cart hosting? I do not want to get off the CPU subject too far and have Kim get upset and close this thread.

Contact your host for more details regarding the cpu usage. What is the main cause? Are too many sql queries loaded at once causing this problem?

The listing at your footer, is that the tag clouds? See if turning it off helps.

You can also cache your category sidebox to avoid having to reload the tree each and every time.

They are being extremely supportive of all my efforts to fix this issue. Is there a specific log file I can run with Zen Cart that will give me details of what is causing the largest loads?

They have not given me a time line to get this fixed. As long as I have told them I am working on it they are fine with that. I will look into what you mentioned about the category sidebox and caching it. Also, I will have them give me the stats for a couple of days with the Tag Cloud off.

    2 good ideas, thank you.
