While dedicated and private are recommended for the customers' benefit, Zen Cart can work with private or shared IP/SSL

Although it will work with a shared SSL or your own SSL, I have found that some hosts have a problem with shared SSL and Zen cart.

Always to have your own SSL, that way the url stays on your site---sometimes wary customers are put off by an entirely new url when entering a credit card number.
