Default Shipping too High, Shipping too Low!

I am going though a check out process to see how things work. First the shipping rates were WAY too high (compared to the USPS and UPS websites). I searched for answers, changed the tare weights, the machinable setting and checked again. Then they were too low!

I went back, added a small tare weight, and looked again, but they are still lower than what the USPS site is showing for estimated shipping.

What else could I be doing wrong?

Have you a Ship From and Ship To address?

What weight are you trying to use?

    What are your Tare Settings?

What is your Maximum Weight setting?

I wasn't able to get back and update but I was fiddling with things last night and I don't know what I did, but I think it's working now! LOL!

It may have had to do with tare, the handling fee, and I'm not sure what else. Whatever it was.....YAY that it's not anymore

Hello Ajeh, I'm very new to forum and know very very little of my admin. I have someone that does most of the stuff behind the scenes. But I have a similar problem with shipping costs. My products are mostly all small and only ounces. I see from this thread that there is a way to set up shipping cost by using the USPS rates into the cart? Would that give the correct shipping for a total of mulitple items at the end of the sale? I have been refunding extra money for postage to my customers for almost a year now! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the USPS shipping module, and add each items weight into the product listing, it will total those up in the cart and charge shipping according to that total weight. Does that make sense? Is that even what you were asking?

Unfortunately, I don't think my problem has been solved after all. We had our first sale yesterday and the shipping did NOT work as I thought it would. I have no tare set, but added a $2 handling fee to cover the costs of packing materials/etc.

My customer was charged $8.13 for shipping. That should have been the weight of the item to her zipcode from mine, plus the $2 right? *I* was charged $8.41 just for the shipping! So, after the cost of the packaging and the pp fee that was taken out, we actually lost money. I'm not sure where I went wrong.

Oops! Sorry. It's at 2lbs in the listing. Ugh. That's it, isn't it? The $2 just wasn't enough to cover that much of an increase in weight.

How would you recommend I have these settings to be fair for the customers, yet affordable for us?
