I don't have the New Products for "month" on my homepage, but I just saw that it shows up when you click on the "your cart is empty" link. What do I need to do to correct this?

It's not something you need to "correct", there is a switch to turn that option on/off in admin->configuration

Admittedly it's in a bit of an odd place ... Admin->Configuration->Stock
