Categories *centre* box?

I've disabled the 'New products for December' centre column sidebox on the main page (cant remember how, though!) and what I'd like to replace it is (under my custom intro) is another sidebox similar to that New products box in terms of layout, but populated by just the Category image for each category. Does such a thing exist? Or if not, anyone have any ideas as to how I'd go about creating it?
