Help with installation/customization

Hello. I am brand new to Zen Cart and pretty new to e-commerce in general. I am trying to figure how to customize it to my site. I ready (and followed as well as I knew how) the instructions on creating a template before doing any customization so that I wouldn't lose my settings when an update was done. So now this is what I am getting.

Any idea what could be causing it? I don't want to start making any changes if I am going to lose them at some point.

Have you gone to your admin - tools - template selection and selected your new template? Don't forget to also set the sideboxes for the template.

That's the default template. If you want to start styling your custom template beginning with the look of the 'Classic' template, you'll need to copy the files from includes/templates/classic/css and includes/yemplates/classic/images to the corresponding folders in your template.

Ah, I was missing a few css files. Thank you very much!
With this template do I have to use an image in the center of the main page, or can I just use items from my store?
