Where is the main product listing query?

hi, i am trying to alter the main query that retrieves the product list if you click on a category name. in the product_listing page columns are called using the $listing variable, which when i traced it back becomes $listing_sql in the advanced search header and nowhere else i can find... surely that cant be where they are being drawn from. when i make changes to that page, of course it only shows up when i search.

Can someone tell me where the query resides? i am very confused.
