Default Are people really this stupid ????

About 3 months ago I got a strange email from a customer which we all laughed at. Now twice in the last week we have had pretty much the same email from another two customers.

All 3 of them wanted to know what the password was to create an account !!!!!

"how do I log in as I dont know the password as I want to purchase a game."

It has me thinking - are people really that stupid that they don't understand you create your own password ??? Then I got to wonder how many people left the site thinking it was some secret club or something they were not invited to. Then again is it our fault that its not clear enough ?

The suggestion was made to put a little explanation in brackets on the create account page about passwords but my personal opinion is that would be completely patronising to the few thousand customers who can successfully complete the form.

Anyway just wondering has anyone else come across these em how would you put it - ah I will be nice inexperienced users ??

Hard to help without seeing the site to see what the problem might be ...

It's not a site specific question Kim.

Just asking has anyone else had emails from people wanting to know the password to the site ( if I did not explain it clearly enough the 3 customers involved were filling in their create account forms and when they got to the password field thought they needed a special password to create an account rather than choosing their own password for their own account.

Nothing to do with the site itself.

    Pat-

It could have to do with the way you are presenting the login and create account sections -

I've never had that happen, but if I had, I'd change the text on the Create Account page from 'Password' to 'Create Your Password', or something similar. Wouldn't seem patronizing to me.

Using gloss blue template - no changes to it.

http://(sorry, site offline)/1-3-8a/...ain_page=login and select pretty much any template you want and you will see its a fairly standard log in page across the board.

Approx 8,000 successful registrations in the last year. Its not the site itself - its a case of the odd user who presumably has never opened an account online anywhere wondering why they are being asked for a password.

Like I said in first post the 1st email was funny but email 2 and 3 just got me thinking ....

It's important to remember that this is the internet. Out off at least 8,000 visitors there is bound to be heaps of people who don't get some basic things. The default log in seems pretty clear.

Try to think of this like an obsolete web browser...do you really need to support it?

If 8000 customers have made a good account, I wouldn't worry about the 3. Maybe they play a joke on you, maybe they are really that "internet challenged", or don't speak your native language well.

Either way, if you worry about it, it is easy as cake to change the text a bit to make it clear as mud.

i setup the zencart for family member selling lab supplies.
each product has description with large font ( i hate the way it looks)
stating price > number of products per box > etc.

We get emails asking .. what is the price ..
    how many per box..
we email them back with info . same on the site ..

we get request on how much to ship .. yehh , they never give out address to where , we have to email back and ask ..
    etc etc etc..

those are people who work in industry .. they work in lab .. they have degree from university ..

so i guess, 3 people asking something like that , shouldn't be that bad.
