Restrict shipping for products in 1 category internationally

Hi,

Im using 1.3.8a ver.

I need to know how to restrict shipping of items in one particular category internationally.

There are lot of products I can ship overseas but I do not want to ship some Live products overseas and can be shipped nationally.

I tried to find in forum, but most i got is that delete where you don't want to send, this will not work for me as I have to sell other products overseas, just need to restrict one category with 30+ items.

You would need to do something to customize the code to not allow someone to add these products when shipping overseas ...

What should happen if I am from overseas and a guest and add all these products to my cart then login and hit the checkout?

What should happen if I am from the US and add all these products to my cart then login and hit the checkout and then change my shipping address to overseas?

well you are from developer side, you have to think on all whats questions.

I want to make sure that if any customer selected restricted item and is not from local then he should not able to checkout. Even if he select other products in his cart or changes shipping address later.

I know lots of things that I can do, as a coder, to make lots of things happen under these two circumstances ... and lots of coding to give the customer different experiences based on logged in or not logged in, based on was US shipping address and then changing it during the checkout ... based on marking products as for the US ONLY or surprising the customer etc. etc. etc.

But I do not know what you, the store owner, wants your customer to see, do, have happen etc. etc. under these conditions ...

You, the store ower, need to "expand" on your ideas here ...

For Question 1:
Once you login, the script should see restricted item based on shipping address irrespective of billing address. Because some can gift a local friend or relative from overseas.

For Question 2:
As given in previous answer, based on shipping address the checkout should be stopped if there is any restricted items present in the cart.

so if we stick to shipping address for restriction, then i think, things can be controlled irrespective of adding to cart before or after login and changing shipping address etc.

i hope im clear enough for you.

this is a much needed option in zencart and many are searching and trying to figure out. I think even if what i suggested, can be implemented then many can compromise on their requirement a little bit to have this option atleast than nothing.

This can be done ... but would require quite a bit of custom coding ...

Right now, you have one category to restrict ... in the future would this grow to other categories?

Do customers have to Login to add to cart?

Advantage being, you could stop adding to the cart right there ...

Disadvantage is you are stopping someone who may be buying from the UK but shipping to the US ...

You could manage this all in the checkout, but then you have the issue of not having told the customer in the first place ...

You could add READONLY Attributes to these products that say:
US SHIPPING ONLY

or something of that nature ... and then use that as part of the testing for checkout ...

Advantage of the READONLY Attribute is that can be tested for based on address ...

Advantage of the READONLY Attribute is that it wouldn't matter the Category that the Product is in as you are looking for a specific options_id and options_values_id for this ...

Disadvantage of the READONLY Attribute test is that there isn't one written for this ... however, this can always be written ...

In any case, this is not a simple 30 second job but it can be written ... so if you are not a coder, you may wish to post in the Commercial Help Wanted with details of what you need ...

I have not seen anything specifically for this, but it is not a bad idea, as I have had to write custom code like this in the past based on a variety of conditions ...
