Make order comments a required field?

Has anyone had any experience with making the comments field a required field?

I confess I'm curious *why* you would want this to be a required field. Any products I need instructions on have a "free text" comments field. If the customer has comments on the order in general, I'm happy to read them, but I don't require that they write something. Am I missing something?

I was actually going to change it to a field that refers to the entire order and is necessary. I like the "date of order" mod, but that also lacks the ability to be required...
