Category Description on Main Page

I am a newbie and trying to set up a site I have entered categories and descriptions. I have the category sidebox displayed and when I click on a category the category name, image, description and sub-categories appear on the main page. I have spent hours on trying to find out how to modify this page, especially the category description. I have a distinct feeling this is relatively simple. ANY help would be appreciated

Well, it's not necessarily simple. Some items can be turned on and off from the Admin, some require editing the CSS files, and some are only changeble if you get into custom coding. If you wanted to share just what you are trying to change, maybe someone can point you in the right direction.

I would like to change the Category description AND modify the look of the page. I hope this helps.
