download brochure link missing

I have set up a test zen cart site (1.3.7.1) in my local win-xp based pc and I have followed all the steps in the manual to setup a separate sidebox with a "download our free brochure" link. This concerns a zipped pdf file inside the /download folder which as in the instructions, is a general document product type product with download attribute added to it.
I have the following issues I would like to get some clue on:

1. Although I get a separate sidebox with this link (separate from the Categories box), the same link appears among the other product categories on the top of the center column of the site (classic template), whereas I wouldn't like it to appear with the other product categories (since this is free, whereas the other categories are for purchase). A similar thing happens when I click "All products" - the link appears among the other products in the listing. I would like it to appear ONLY on the separate sidebox which already exists.

2. WHen I click on this link (as a visitor who is about to download the free brochure), I only see the title and the checked radio button (as expected) which tells the visitor that it is a zip file, but I dont see any download link.

I know that in case I dont find a solution to this approach I can create a static EZ page with just a download link for the brochure without having setup the pdf file as a product. But before I do that, I was wondering if I can fix the above 2 issues using the initial method (as described in the manual also). I have searched the forum and the tutorials section for something similar, but I haven't found anything.

I would start out by setting up a current version of Zen Cart rather than an old, out dated version ...

The current version of Zen Cart is Zen Cart v1.3.8 ...

so, you think that the issues I refer to above, have to do with a bug of 1.3.7.1 or are you suggesting that I install the latest version for more general reasons ? (eventually, I will be using the dual pricing add-on, a wish-list module and some kind of an affiliate module, so I was wondering if these add-ons justify the installation of 1.3.8)

But I am suggesting why work on fixing something that is out-dated when that code you are using is older than the hills ...

Plus, a lot more folks can help you after you have a good site setup if the errors do not magically disappear on their own ...

what about the admin menus. Are they the same (I mean 1.3.8) as 1.3.7.1 ? I don't mind if 2 or 3 commands are new, or differ.

ok, I upgraded to 1.3.8a, do I need to install the security patches and the bug fixes stated above, or they are included in that version ? (I still don't see any download link, could it have to do with the fact that I am running the site from my local pc?)

You really want to do all the updates from all 3 of the links I posted to be current and secure ...
