Physical product with downloadable instructions

Is it possible to have a physical product for which shipping is charged, that also offers to a download?

I saw that file downloads are handled as attributes, but I wasn't sure if I could have it both ways.

Let's say you have Software that can be received as a Physical CD or as a Download ...

You can set this up with attributes ...

Option Name: Media Format

Option Values could be defined as:

NOTE: this first Option Value forces a proper selection between the CD and Download and the customer cannot make a mistake by accidentally choosing the one they did not want ... you can call it anything ...

Select format
Default YES
Display Only YES
Sort Order 0

CD
Weight Prefix + (or you can leave it blank)
Weight 2.5
Sort Order 10

Download Zip
Sort Order 20
Filename: blahblah.zip
Maximum Download Count: 5
Maximum Download Days: 10

NOTE: be sure to upload the Download file into the /download directory ...

Now when the CD is added to the shopping cart, the CD will add weight for shipping ...

When the Download is added to the shopping cart, the filename on the Download will trigger no shipping ... if this is the only product in the cart then you will not see the checkout_shipping ...

If there are many things in the shopping cart, the Download will not affect the weight of the order and shipping will calculate correctly ...

Of course the instructions will be slightly different for a product which is always physical, but has a downloadable component too... :)

This is a printer ink refill and continuous ink system website that needs instructions downloadable for every product, so like gjh42 mentioned, this is a product that is always physical, but has a downloadable component to go with it. How can I make this happen?

Oh yes ... there is another setting that is specially made for this kind of Product ...

Always Free Shipping: Special, Product/Download Combo Requires a Shipping Address

This allows for a Product that is Physical *and* has a Download that goes with the Physical Product ...

This will allow shipping to work for the Physical part of the Product and the Download to work at the same time ...
