500 Internal Server Error from contact us page and placing order

I am noticing that there is a internal server error that occurs after a email is sent through the contact us page. After the customer clicks send on the contact us page a error page appears. This problem also occurs after a customer submits their order. I have only tested the orders with checks as the payment method and do not know if this problem would occur for paypal payments as well. Please note that the contact us emails do not get sent as far as I can tell, but the orders are being placed.

Anyone know what could be wrong here?

I recommend taking a look at the similar threads section at the bottom of this page. You'll find a number of possible causes discussed in them. If those don't give you an answer that works. Then post back here with the potential causes that you have eliminated.

These do not seem to help, they are about errors for the admin pages, I have not had any problems with the admin pages. One of the posts discusses an error for the checkout process, but there were no solutions given.

I noticed a similarity between the issues, they stated they had been making changes with the shipping mods, I have recently cloned 3 flat shipping mods. I don't know how this would cause the problem, but it may be a clue to what is wrong.

There is a chance you may need to switch to smtp mail method and enter your details. This can be done within the admin panel under email options.

There isnt much detail to go on but your host may have disabled or changed the configuration for sendmail or phpmail

Thank you for everything. I am not sure really how I fixed the problem but it is working now. I changed to the auth email option and updated all of that and it still did not work. My hosting company said it was a php header error. I ended up changing to php email option and it somehow worked.
