Sort Order - Display Products by Quantity Available

Is there an easy way of displaying the items in my shop (or in the Featured Page) sorted by number available so that those products that are in stock appear first. I want to keep those items out of stock still in my shop so customers can see what has been available - so I don't want to turn off products that are sold out.

I see a way of doing this in the admin area - but this only works for the admin area - I want my products displayed like this in my on-line shop

The drop-down searches give me sort by product name etc - I figured it might be possible to write something to give me a product-quantity sort order.

The randomization prevents this ability. We have a mod we submitted which gives a new center content and side box area which can display a multitude of variations....

For example...
choose and order only certain products
choose products from a certain category, but exclude some
choose full randomization

All displayed per position... So like item 1 from category 2 random, position 2 product number 5, position 3 full random etc..
