I have found that sometimes with IE7 it takes a while to show up. FireFox, chrome or Safari should pick it up right away.

Hmmmmmm......
Now i am the only one so far to respond with this problem.
I managed to get the Favicon todisplay in IE7 straight away, but it won't show in Firefox.
Anyway got any ideas... I've cleared cache and sessions.
Thanks
My FAVICON still does not show on IE. Works great on FireFox.
Remember that MS is quite specific about the acceptable format of the contents if the favicon.ico file.
If the image you've created doesn't exactly suit their specs, then IE won't show it.
Also, IE doesn't display a favicon as soon as it knows there is one. It must first cache it ... and to do that requires bookmarking the site. After that the favicon will show in IE whenever you visit the page ... until you empty your browser cache at least. Then you must bookmark it again.
Firefox does it smarter ... and caches it and immediately shows it as soon as it knows there's an image to display.
If it's just a bookmarking thing, you can fix it by bookmarking the site.
One way to attempt to test what's going on is to directly surf to your favicon file with your browser. Type in the URL to your favicon.ico file: http://YOUR_DOMAIN.COM/favicon.ico
See what happens. it should show you an almost-blank page with your favicon in the top left corner ... very tiny.

I just get a blank image with an X in Explorer. When I search for the image URL in Firefox, it shows up.
Explorer and Microsoft sucks. I am so done with the PC. My next computer will be a Mac. I know this has nothing to do with the Favicon. It is just another example of Microsoft screwing with everyone with incompatible software and programs.
How did you create this favicon? You didn't just rename a jpeg or png?

I used photoshop saved as web gif file and then renamed it to favicon.ico. Should I not have done that? What is the best way to create the file?
The best way is to use one of the tools listed in this thread:
