strange symbol

just set up a dummy account to test the purchase and email confirmation etc...

got the purchase confirmation email through fine but there's a strange symbol before the £ sign, see below:

The Gift Certificate(s) you purchased are worth £5.00

This strange  synbol is annoying me..... why is it there and how do i get rid of it?
