Also, keep in mind that every host configures their server restrictions differently ... so some hosts may disallow the use of some statements in .htaccess files on their server. If you get errors after altering/uploading .htaccess files, you may have to talk to the hosting company to deal with their unique configuration requirements. (This is kinda what kobra was referring to.)
