Mysterious Deactivation

I am going through my inventory and I'm finding that hundreds of dollars worth of product have been deactivated.

Can anyone tell me why this might be happening and how can I prevent it from happening again?

Do you have stock control setup?
Are these items with "0" stock?

No these items have the quantity correct, but under Status, the little square is red (deactivated) but should be green (activated).

My partner helped me figure it out. I had deactivated a sub category and it deactivated those items in all the other categories.
