Downloads prevent "add to cart" from category listing

Hi, I followed the instructions for creating a download and it says to create an attribute of type "dropdown" and then to set up download files.

This all works well and downloads are functioning on the site. However, since I am setting up a cart for a software company I really will only ever have one option for each product for downloads (the software). Is there any way to have the customer add the product to their cart from the categories page and automatically select the only available attribute download type?

At this point, instead of text boxes for customers to easily add a number of products to their cart, all they get is "more info..." links and have to go to each product's display page in order to add it to the cart.

It's working as it's designed to work at the present time.
In a future version it may be possible to do direct add-to-cart for attribute-connected products, but to do it presently would require you to do your own code customization.

Would you be able to point me in the right direction as to where/how the system would have to be modified? Just some generic answers from an architectural standpoint would work, I have a fairly decent knowledge of PHP but am having trouble figuring out where to look.
