Adding SSL through my remote server

zen-cart 1.3.8
Linux server.

When I purchased space on a web server I also bought an SSL certificate. Does any body here have experience with adding one of these? I know what to change in Zencart because I've read the tutorial in this site...

But before that. How do I get the SSL certificate to be enabled to my domain. Is this something that I just ask my service provider to do and give the domain name I want it for? Also is it best to use the SSL certificate for the entire domain name and all it's contains or just a section of the site? and should I register example.com or www.example.com?
