Add new field to product display

Hi,

I added a new field into file tpl_product_info_display.php, because I need user to be able to enter some other fields except quantity, when is performing checkout.
1) I add it manually, in php. is there any other way ?
2) What is the next step? to make it persistent ? To save it with order ? In what page should I change ?

Would adding a text attribute take care of this for you?
