Making a clone

I want to make a clone of something that already exists (Categories) can this be done and can you take a link from the Categories and put it somewhere else without it showing in the Categories.

The question is very vague. Do your mean the categories tabs menu, the categories sidebox, the category grid on the index pages, or the whole categories infrastructure? Some more background about what you're planning would help us to advise and even warn if there's a better way than the one you've come up with.

Forget what I said I want to move my Portfolio from the categories and put it on top of my site next to Log in/Register Portfolio My Account and can you tell me how to make/add sidebox sorry for not making much sense I am a bit tired.

If I understand correctly, you want the link for your portfolio catgeory to appear next to your Login/Register link and not in the categories sidebox.

If the products in that category were converted to product type = document, then that would move them out of the main category box and into the document category box which you could then enable. With a little programming this could be relocated to the header, though it wouldn't be trivial.
