How to make first items ordered free?

I am selling an item but would like to make the first 2 purchased free of charge and charge for any extra ordered. I have tried adding an attribute that would deduct the charges for the first 2 items, but it will not handle a negative number for one time charges. I am using version 1.3.8a. URL is www.NotepadsForFree.com. There must be an easy way to do this.

Good point, but, they need to pay for the shipping and handling and any extras they want. They might only order 2 pads.

I was thinking they have to order "some" quantity and you just send the additional ones along with them ...

Or, could this be done with Discount Coupons for a given amount to cover the cost of 2 pads?

I found the contribution called Quantity Discounts. That took care of it nicely. The coupon idea also worked, but this works better for me.
