My logo is a jpg, is there somewhere in the css that I can change it from gif to jpg?

The Developers Tool Kit is your friend ...
Peek in the Tools ... Developers Tool Kit ... and in the bottom input box type in:
logo
Select the Catalog and click Search ...
You will see where the logo image is defined and you can change it with your templates and overrides to anything you like ...
