where to specify attributes?

I read the tutorial on how to add attributes

I am adding Artist,Dimensions, signed and year completed as text (read only) attributes along with the price and description that are already in Zen cart. They are to show up on the product_info_display page, in my custom product info display and my store is selling glass pieces of several types.

I can create the attributes and they show up in the attributes controller, but they don't seem to add to the products?

I have massively changed the stock look of zen cart per my specs for this store and I am comfortable overriding/modifying the php code. Actually I prefer it.

Shouldnt these attributes show up when I add a new product on the admin-> catalog-> categories interface? They never do so how can I set their individual artist/Dimension/ signed/year attributes?

Once created, the Option NAMES (and associated VALUES you choose at the time) must be ASSIGNED to each product...

... they don't just apppear there automatically.

In your catalog/products menu, navigate to a product and on the right of the screen you'll see a black circle with "A" in it.

Click that - it takes you to the attribute controller for that product.

Assign whatever option NAMES you like, and however-many VALUES associated with that name.

(When complete, that BLACK circle turns BLUE - alerting you to the fact that the product now has attributes.
