Changing font in stylesheet

I have encountered a strange problem. I want to change the
sub category fonts that appear in the center box. I am using the
Glacial Age template. I added a rule in the CSS stylesheet as
follows:

.categoryListBoxContents a {
font-weight: bold;
}

I get the desired result in the center box, but the categories and
subcategories listed in the categories sidebox have been adversely
affected in that the font color for SOME of the categories changed
from WHITE to BLACK. And they change colors when I select the
affected category. Can anyone explain what is going on or what I
may have done wrong?
