If you're regularly having to disable the .htaccess security settings, then your problem would appear to be related to how your hosting company has configured their server.
Have you discussed this matter with your host?
Have you reviewed the server errorlogs to see what the server is rejecting?
Have you tried doing the same thing on a different server configured by a different hosting company who has a better handle on security configurations that doesn't prevent the operation of the security protections provided by the default Zen Cart files?

    Hi
thanks for your response. I sent my hosting company a support ticket advising what i have done and that the server will need to be configured for security as i have changed the access files to get them to work. Well i didnt say that to him but i copied and pasted a section out of the tutorial area which explained that if the htaccess files are changed to .htaccess_off then to contact your server.

I was extremely shocked with the reply. They said that streamline.net are a hosting company and they do not give support for designing websites. So i replied back saying that they should read the question properly as it has nothing to do with designing the site but the security of the my files and as they are hosted on their server it regards them and their support.

Still waiting on a reply. This other website that im trying to get up and going is also with them. I find their admin and ftp server to be very straightforward and they give a 3 months free trial period.

But im still having the problem and in the admin area the pics are not showing. The pics for edit-reset-check for updates and so on

My experience with host: fire some support tickets during your trial period, see what they have to say. You will find it very costly, when doing business on a cheap host that does not properly support their clients.
I no longer provide installation support on forum for all my modules. However, if there are real bugs with the modules please feel free to contact me

could you recommend a host. I want one where i can host about 4-5 domains all having there own control panel and that are known to support zencart. I mean i don't want to have the issue of changing the .htaccess files again. Also I don't want to be waiting between 5-8 days for a reply to a support ticket. i don't know if this is the right way to say it but i am looking for a zencart compatible host with good support.
    cheers

Look at the list of Zen Cart certified hosts (link at top of this page). Otherwise, advertising hosting or other services is not allowed on the forum; people can send you any recommendations by PM.

Ok ive got myself a new host and everything is working fine with them. I have changed the .htaccess_off back to .htaccess and everything's fine.

I received a reply from streamline.net today 8 days later. They said that they do not support issues relating to zencart or other softwares. I replied back advising that i have now moved and that if they couldnt support me with the security of my directories that are hosted on their site then no one could as its their server that its hosted on so they should provide server support regardless of what package you have on it.

I went with hostgator and so far they have been great. 24/7 live support. and the control panel has many more functions and allows the user much more control. For streamline.net they wouldnt even allow me to create a custom 404 page. they said they would do it for me.

anyway thanks for all the help
