Replacing Categories sidebar with images

Hi-
I'd like to replace the individual sidebar categories with a different image for each category (and then just link it to the proper category.)

How do i do this?

I was thinking maybe instead of messing with the categories display, i could just add an HTML box to the side. so maybe my question is really, how do i add a fresh HTML box to the left column? Is there a way to easily create a blank module?

Using static HTML will be an issue, because the category box content is dynamically created.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered several times over the years. Try searching a bit longer.
