Asking for password

I have just installed with newsest version on WIndows (1st time) and ran through the admin pages. All went well.
I an starting customization and the first was change the upper left ZenCart logo. I found the file to be logo.gif, so all i did was replace it with my logo.gif, but when i do and refresh the page, a box pops up asking for a username and password. if i enter good data, i see my logo. if i cancel i see a placeholder. Every file and folder level security setting (i have direct access to the server, not via ftp) is exactly the same. Everything else seems to work so far ...still testing.
Any ideas why on this?

I did not find the answer, but I did just rename my file and edit header.php to reflect new name and now it works. weird!
