If you look at http://www.dystynction.com you can see that the text in the footer is wider than the main page wrapper..... does anyone know which part of the stylesheet is controlling this?

Simply a case of too many links. The display is probably INLINE in the stylesheet (look for #navSupp)
Consider getting rid of some of the links. Of this complete list:
