Replace New Prod/Mo Box w/custom box?

I want to take out the New Products for (month) box and replace it with something else. I know I'd have to get something from the add-on link above, I'm just wondering if someone can suggest which add on.

What I'd like to do is create an area that I can add clickable pics. For instance, I'd like 8 images, each that will link to a product category.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

You can turn the box off from the admin and turn on the Always show categories on main - all without touching the code.
