help question Unable to migrate to new server. Help required.

    Hi all,

I'm having a major headache moving my shop to a new server/hosting system. I've tried the following tutorials.

    https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/i...hp?article=100
    https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=99

tutorial 100 gives me a semi working store but I am unable to even log in or access the admin panel (links missing). Also the modifications as listed below are all screwed up as far as I can see.

Tutorial 99 just gives me a blank IE page when trying to run the zc_install link so no joy with this tutorial either.

    I'm running ZC 1.3.8a
    Mods =
    About us page 1.3.0.14
    Add customers from admin 1.02
    Auction product type 99a
    Edit orders 2.0
    FAQ page 1.0
    Glacial age template 1.0
    Hide categories 1.10
    Printable price list 1.5.0

Any help will be appreciated or guidance on just migrating my current stock to a clean install. I've got over 1200 items listed so far and thanks to my host going bust I'd hate to have to start from scratch with my new host.

    Thanks in advance.

Well this is how I did it.
    • Install MySQL backup on the old server and back up all your database.

    • Back up all your Zen Cart Folder in the puplic_html. Either use the backup mod or use filezilla to download all the folders on your computer.

    • On the new server create a new database and username using the myphpadmin, then use the sql command to add the database you downloaded from your previous site.

    • On the new server upload all the Zen Cart files from the previous server, you can use any ftp client such as FileZilla.
    • Once all your files are uploaded to the new server, which might take a while there are 2 files you need to edit admin/includes/cofigure.php and includes/configure.php make sure those two files permission are set to writable. Open the 2 configure files with your favorite php editor. Carefully change the directories inside these files to the new server configurations. You will need to change the database name and password as well as the link to your site from the server. If you are not comfortable editing the configure file, download a fresh install zen cart on the new server, remove the 2 configure files from the files you downloaded from the previous server and override all the zen cart files on your new server so you can get all the mods and the files you had previously installed to function correctly.
Note: you would still need to have the database created and flashed with the sql files from your previous Store

If you do this correctly you should have an exact image site of your site on the new server which will include the database even the sessions.

What do you mean by flashing with the sql files? I've tried all of what you have suggested already with the exception of what you stated above.

Copy files across to new server,
    Import Tables to new database,
    edit includes/configure.php & admin/includes/configure.php

    Am I missing something out?

    Thanks for the reply.

I am not sure how you transferred the database to the new server but you must have something missing or not configured correctly in one of the configure files.

I have gave you 2 options to do the transfer the flashing is basically creating the same database you had on your previous hosting on the new server.

If your site does not have a lot of big files, remove all the files from the server and install a fresh zen cart files, use the ZC_install to install the new cart then re-upload all your previous files to the server. Note: make sure you remove the 2 configure files, from your old files.

When changing server the only thing that you need to change is the 2 configure files and creating the database tables. That is it.

I just transferred a site earlier this week with no problems.

What you are suggesting then is basically what tutorials 99 & 100 state.

As stated in my first post I've tried these options. I also use Filezilla as you do to transfer files.

Thanks for your help but it looks like I may need some help from someone with the same or similar problem.

As I stated above, the only files that need to be edited are the configure files you might want to make sure the permissions are set to write on the configure files. If you want I can take a peek at your store, I will need access to your cpanel on both sites. You can PM that access I will be happy to check your files. Don't post them here.

Taking a peek is not possible as we have confidential data within the store.

Changing the configure.php files has already been tried. This problem is more complicated than it sounds.

Based on Zen Cart Files that come with the latest install the 1.3.8a, all you have to do to change server is changing the 2 configure files. I have done it lots of times and every time it works.
The only thing that can be wrong is human error caused by whoever tried to edit the configure files.

Good Luck! Gotta finish my friends site.

You definitely need to revisit the values in the configure files. I've changed hosts myself and the tutorials do work.
