    Default Re: Additional Categories Sidebox?

I have created a sidebox according to the direction Hare Do gave, and it worked great, however, how do I change the title box from "documents" to something else?

Also, is there a way to just list products in this box without starting with a category first?

    Thanks in advance...

    Am,
Click on the tab Called: Tutorials/FAQ
    1. Search for developers tool kit
    2. now search with this kit for : Documents
    3. and you will find the .php file to edit

    includes/languages/english/extra_definitions/document_general.php

"Top" is the name for the invisible "category" that contains all of the real categories. You cannot have anything else at the Top level, but you can add more real top level categories if you already have some.

Showing products in a categories sidebox would require a major change in the coding. Clydejones' Expanded Category mod in Free Addons shows them, but it also shows all categories and all products at the same time. It might be possible to modify that to work if you are good with PHP.

Forgive me, I don't quite understand. I was able to get the header changed, but I want to be able to add products to this "documents" side box without having to add a category first.

The instructions were to add a category and to change the restrictions in order to get this box to show up, is there a way to add products without adding categories first and still use this "documents" side box?

I want to be able to just list options available, instead of having to click the category, and then the options appear.

I hope this makes sense. See www.londonsautobody.com - "Add Paint Option" side box.

    Thanks again.

That site's "Add Paint Options" box does not point to a product, it points to a category, which then has subcategories (which currently are empty, with no products).

And if you actually do want the products to show in the sidebox, create a category for each product, and make sure that Configuration > Layout Settings > Skip 1-prod Categories is set to true. Clicking the category link will go straight to the product page.

I think I worked around it pretty good. I had to get creative, but I think I got it.

    Thanks for your help though.

Yep, three single-product subcategories in the "Paint It:" top category do the job nicely.

Sorry to bump an old post, but I wanted to say what an AWESOMELY simple solution!!!

    This is a short version
You could use a little tricky feature of coding here ...

If you are not using Document General Product Type ...

Make a Category and set the Category Restrictions to:
    Document General
    Product General

What this does is by having the Category marked as Restricted to Document General, that is a trigger to put that Category in the Document Sidebox ...

Marking it as Restricted to Product General allows normal Products to be added ...

Providing you set all of the Categories to both:
    Document General
    Product General

They will show in the Document Sidebox vs the Categories Sidebox ...

Now, you can use this Category Restriction to divide your Categories between 2 sideboxes ...

Note: Be careful that you set all Categories for the Document Sidebox to both Product Types or you will not see the Category/SubCategory in the Document Sidebox if it is missing the Restriction ...

NOTE: if you did not notice, the Restrictions for a Category appear when you Edit the Category ...

If you have to think ... you haven't been zenned ...
A simpler version of the task

Create the category, then go back and edit it. At the bottom of the page (Restrict to Product Type), select Document-General, then click Add Include Subcategories. When it refreshes, select Product-General and click Add Include Subcats.

The page will now show the two product types enabled. Save it.

When you go to create a product in the category, the dropdown will let you choose which of those two types to use.

Of course you will half to edit the english.php file to change the side box headings Category to Shop by Subject and Documents to Shop by Grade Level

    1. includes/ languages/ maestro/ english.php
    2. remember to leave the single quotes
    3. EX: 'Category' will be 'Shop by Subject'
