    cart error Templates override

    Hi,
Firstly before I get told or even shouted at I am following the tutorial what I am asking is this.
Where do the files go etc?

I have opened filezilla and dragged zen cart from site to my pc, now cant find em.
Once this is done (and I can locate zen) I locate the php files as described and once i have edited to my liking i save them in a file of my choice?? or not?
After this how do I then update these files on the site version of zen cart?

Hope this makes sense to someone caus I barely understand it.

    Hi Michaela,

I'm a Mac-aholic, so I'm not too sure where things 'go' in Windows. But it's possible that there is a default directory set in the prefs of Filezilla. Someone who uses FZ can explain more specifically I'm sure.

In the meantime, do a search for a filename unique to Zen Cart -- perhaps page_not_found.php or nddbc.html. Both of them should be in the top level of your Zen Cart folders on your hard drive.

The idea of the override system is so you save copies of files in the same folder structure (but not the same folder locations) that the originals are in, and Zen Cart is smart enough to look for the copies first and use them. The Tutorials explain it with lots of examples. So when you ask if you save your edits in another file, that's sort of it. But the file has to be the same name and in a very specific location for it to work. So the best way is to copy the file into the right spot first, then edit it and save.

Once you've done those changes locally (and you can even test your site locally if you have XAMPP installed) then turn once more to Filezilla and upload your changed files to the right override folders on your server.

It's one of those things that is much easier to do (once you "get it") than to describe.

Kobra, that was the set of tutorials i was following. There seems to be some steps which are assumed. This is what was boggling me, the tutorials are great (no offence intended to author) but they expect the reader to have some knowledge for example that you know to use an ftp to do the changes etc

Rob, thanxs for your reply it seemed that there was some sort of delay with filezilla it turned up in my c drive eventually. technology!!

Yes, unfortunately, this is not "how to use a PC 101" and it is expected that one have some general knowledge of files, tree structure, folders/dir's, FTP, general code editing ettique, and so on.

If you understand the tree structure, then where ever you find an existing "classic" folder - then all files that exist in that folder - NOT other folders that are seen, only the files - can be overriden and you will create a folder there named for your template to house these overriden files

No your right it isnt PC 101, but its hardly missing out using the keyboard to type. There are alot of different programmes here that I havent used and I imagine alot of people have found too so from my perspective it can be overwhelming and a tutorial is supposed to be a step by step guide even if its glaringly obvious to the author and others in the know its not to those of us who havent used these prgrammes or downloaded zen before, you know the beginner that was you at one point too. Everyone has to learn. I am trying to do that if it means I ask obvious questions its the only way I am going to...
