to many categories?

Is it possible to have to many categories and subcategories?

I would like to setup lots of categories/subcategories for a simple way of finding the correct part(s) on my site.

Example:

Manufacturer (probably will be 3 main)
Machine (around 15 per Manufacturer)
Part Categories (about 47 per machine)
Part (product, I want to link the products using link manager)

It's possible to have too many, but in your situation, I think your proposed setup is the best that can be done. Grouping the parts by manufacturer and machine will make it much easier for people who may need several different parts.

do you know of a way I can import the subcategories? Going through the admin interface is kinda time consuming.

Afraid not. It is probably possible to load subcat info directly into the database, but I don't know how to do it.
