Zen Cart reading weight wrong

I have entered into the Products Shipping Weight: field the number
1.4

which as far as I know should tell ZC that item weighs 1.4 pounds. At checkout the item is listed as 4.4 pounds.

Any ideas why this is not reading the weight correctly?

This is because of TARE settings.

See: admin>>>configuration>>>shipping/packaging

and adjust your tare settings as needed.

The TARE setting is designed to take into account the additional weight PACKAGING adds to a consignment.

Your PRODUCTS have a weight...

... but SO DOES the box in which you ship it !

So, the GROSS weight will calculate by adding all the product weights together, then applying that TARE factor (so that the true SHIPPING weight will include the total PRODUCT weight, plus the PACKAGING weight.)
