Paypal IPN issues. Any opinions on Authorize AIM or other solutions?

Hello,

This is my first post. I'm not satisfied with Paypal IPN because it can be confusing to credit card customers when they are taken to Paypal.com to complete the transaction (if they make it that far). I think I lost a customer at Step 2 of 3 Payment Information. There is a Payment Method box that suggests that a payment method could be selected. However, with Paypal IPN there is no selection to make because the selection cannot made until the customer gets to the Paypal.com page.

We use Hostgator and we have SSL. Would AUTHORIZE AIM be a good way to go? Are there other choices? If AUTHORIZE AIM is installed on our Zen Cart site, would we also be able to accept credit cards at craft shows using the same merchant account and gateway?

Several things here:

1. Why not PayPal Express?
2. Authorize AIM is a good choice.
3. Many merchant accounts are internet only or store front only. Make sure whatever you get will allow both in some way.
4. Had linkpoint at one point which allowed me to enter data through their site for face to face. Problem is the required receipt for the customer and if there is an attempt at chargeback.

PayPal Express Checkout is a good choice.
So is Authorize.net, especially the AIM option.
It's always a good idea to consider offering traditional credit card options on your site, and also add PayPal so that customers who are familiar with PayPal can use that.

What are the traditional credit card options?
I wonder if you can possible help on this delima that i am having?
I have an Ebay shop which cost me about £30 a month in fees, on average. I was thinking of ditching the shop and going with website payment pro, at £20 for my store. This will include the virtual terminal, which is vital for telephone orders.
Do you think it is a good idea to give express checkout a try first to see how things go, before closing the shop?
Any advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

By "traditional credit card options", I was referring to having direct credit-card processing on your website. One can do that via Website Payments Pro, or by using a merchant account and gateway service designed for taking CC payments online. In the UK, protx is good for that, as are others. You can see some payment offerings on the Recommended Services page (see link at top of this page).
