attributes WITHOUT stock????

What I want seems straightforward but I am at a complete loss!

I have a product that has attributes, but I don't want the attributes to have stock.

For example, say I am selling a dress that is handmade. I have a limited amount of the material, but I can make the dress in any size. So I want the product inventory to be, say 5. I want an attribute so the customer can pick the size, but I don't want this attribute to affect the inventory level.

I have tried the stock by attributes module, but I couldn't get it to perform this function. Is there any way to have attributes that do not alter the product stock?

In an unmodified cart, there is no relationship between attributes and stock, so your stock would be reduced simply by the qty ordered regardless of attributes.

I don't know why this isn't working for me. Right now I have a product with the quantity set at 1. There is an attribute drop down (size) with 7 different possible sizes.

It is letting me add 1 product in each size (or 7 products total) to my cart. However, this is a problem because I can only make 1.

If I try to add the same size 2 times, I do get an error, and it will not add it to the cart.

am I missing something obvious? I am so stuck. Obviously I don't want to have to tell customers that I cannot fulfill their order, and have to deal with refunds and everything. This is the only problem keeping me from opening shop.

It would help TREMENDOUSLY if you posted a link so people can get a better understanding of your issue.. Also, keep in mind that this is a forum full of volunteers, so you may not always get an answer to your questions.. That said, a link to the site would probably help get things rolling on an answer for ya...

Also a link to a smaple product where the problem exists might help too.. You've got a lot of categories (many empty) for someone to go through to find a sample product..

BTW, at first blush your problem sounds like a setting issue.. Bunnyip is right, Zen out the box does not work the way you describe..

any product will do, they all work the exact same way. I haven't done anything to change the way zen cart would handle this problem. it is the way it was handled from installation. I have been looking for a solution since I installed it. I have a degree in computer science so I have tried to look around the code myself, but without knowing which files handle this issue I am hesitant to make any changes.

if it is just a setting that would be great. I have looked through all the settings and I didn't see anything that sounded right, but I could have overlooked something.
