Default index.php gives redirect loop error

Hi, I have a new install -- 1.3.8a on a new host, with no addons. I was given a db export from an old version ( 1.2.1) that lived on an old host to make "work". So, I have my work cut out for me.

I've got two copies of the same 1.3.8.a installed in separate directories. The first copy has demo data installed and runs fine.

The second copy has the old db installed. I upgraded the db check box by check box using the updater. I can see the data from the admin part of the site. BUT... I am getting the redirect loop error when I go to www.mysite.com/index.php.

I *can* see some subpages (e.g. http://mysite.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=27), but not index.php.

I think my configure files are correct, ssl is disabled. I've searched the forum, but didn't find an answer, at least not one that I understood well enough to make work.

Any thoughts on how I can troubleshoot this? Thanks!

    Some suggestions.

    - check the threads listed at bottom of this page, it lists problems similar to yours
    - use the Free Addon link at top of this page and get the debug_error_logging_utility which may pinpoint the problem

Yeah, I read those threads... they did feature somewhat similar problems but they didn't offer any actual solutions, lol. It seems, from reading the forum, that this is a not uncommon problem but one that doesn't have a commonly known fix.

I did try that debugging utility, too. It gave me some install info, but it didn't seem to be anything other than the messages I got while updating the db... I can go back and comb through them and see if there's anything I missed.
