Not able to send emails

I want to set up my own shopping store.In this process i am setting up the store on my local pc first.
In this process I am taking help from "E-start your Web store with Zen Cart".I must say that this is a great book.
Here i have configured thunderbird .I am able to connect the local server.I am using XAMPP,all tools and naming conventions according to book.The problem is I am not able to connect outgoing SMTP server when I am trying to send mail from one customer in thunderbird to other.Plz help me out......

To my knowledge Thunderbir is only an email client. It is not a mail server or MTA.
Yoiu would need to install some MTA on your local BUT this IMO is a waste of time. Just put this up on a hosted service for these issues.
