css page numbers - background-image

Hi All,

I am currently making a list of things i need to do and something came to mind.

what would be the easiest way to display the 'page numbers' as the screenshot/mock-up below using CSS (all browser friendly)

Im sure its been covered but i cant seem to find the post/thread.

And maybe...........
have the user click on the page number and AJAX does the 'postback' ONLY in the center column.
(using JQuery)

Any help would be great?

And as always I will post the code and let you decide if its worth the read.
