Add new field to product table?

Hopefully a simple question --- how do I add a new field to the product table? How do I even locate the table? Through FTP? Is it a SQL Database thing? I'm just confused.

I downloaded a module for "sales price" and it wants me to add a string to the product table by editing it.

I have no clue how to get started.

I can searching everywhere on this forum and read talk about editing the table but no info on how to.

The database is a MySQL DB, but you won't find it in your store's folder on your web server. Many web hosts have a PHP admin, and you should be able to edit the tables there, including adding a new field.
