No order number when using Paypal

I have version 1.3.7 and have been using Zen for a few years without too much trouble. I have noticed that when a customer buys a product and pays with Paypal Zen does not give an order number hence customer does not get an email confirming order, no order is in Zen as a pending order.... I dont get any emails to say a product has been sold.... all I get is a Paypal email saying that Mr customer has paid $some money into my account. Have no idea what he bought.....
If another payment method is used all works perfectly... this is only on Paypal. I have Paypal IPN basic module installed.

I went in as a customer and bought a product worth $0.10 with free shipping. I selected payment Paypal and proceeded to Paypal payment screen... I paid the item and then the button was there returning me to my shopping cart...the page said something like "We apprecticate your business...blah blah" and "Your order number is ........." blank....

Any ideas ??

That's a classic problem with PayPal IPN on many hosts. Something's preventing PayPal from telling your server that the order is completed, and thus the order number is never generated, nor is the confirmation email.
If you're on GoDaddy hosting, you'll have to make a coding change to fix a quirk resulting from a server change they made.

Hi Dr,
I followed the instructions on the page you gave me and all was perfect except when I entered the http://www.timeoutmassage.com.au/zen...in_handler.php... it says it should be a white screen with the first phrase of Paypal... instead I got this

"1054 Unknown column 'zen_order_id' in 'field list'
in:
[SELECT zen_order_id, paypal_ipn_id, payment_status, txn_type, pending_reason FROM paypal WHERE txn_id = '' ORDER BY zen_order_id DESC ] "

Does this help you in any way...???

Ya, it does. It confirms that you've somehow installed a v1.3.8 version of some of the PayPal modules on your older v1.3.7 site, and that 1.3.8 code has altered the structure of your PayPal database, thus making the code incompatible with the database.
So, it seems you've been installing incompatible code and/or doing upgrades and not completing them, etc.

I hired a company to do an upgrade for me... but this was ages ago and I am sure it was working after this..... I have to think abotu that.... how can I be sure this is what has happen.... is there a way to check the version of Paypal that has been installed...???

I'm going to not answer that question. Instead I'm going to ask a different one:

- Go to Admin->Tools->Server Info ... and tell me what it says in the top section, above the PHP version section. I want the part that shows your Zen Cart version, upgrade history, database version, etc. I don't need the lower 90% of the page that talks about all the PHP settings.
