Default GZip Compression Error: Pages Wont Load

I'm testing my site on a new server, but for some reason when I switch on GZip Compression from Admin, the site won't load and all I get is the following error:

    Content Encoding Error

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.

The site works perfectly well when GZip Compression is disabled. However, parse times do suffer considerably. The strange thing is that other sites sharing the same server are working well, with GZip Compression enabled. Just not mine.

Has anyone come across this error before when trying to enable GZip? I have the same site uploaded on another server and it works well there with GZip enabled. I'm thinking then that it has to be a server issue, but why are other sites on the same server working fine with GZip?

    Anyone?

GZIP must be specifically compiled on your server. Ask your webhost.

Hi, thanks for the info, but why are other sites on the same server working fine with GZip? Does it have to be compiled specifically for my site? My host doesn't understand it either.

Well, not to assume... but how are you sure they are on the same server?

Many times, shared hosting they are not. Just worth asking them.

Then you would look for ini and system files specific to this account with command for GZIP in them

Hi, I've been speaking to my host about it and here's the response from them:

"We checked the parse times on multiple sites on your hosting. All seem to be working well but then again most are running Gzip. However as soon as we switch this function on for your site (via admin>configuration) the front page of your site won’t load? – We haven’t seen this problem before so may be worth looking on the forum."

I've asked them to take another look and hopefully it'll be something simple

If your server already has GZip turned on, you do not want to turn it on again ...

You can check your site at:

Enter a valid page URL, I usually test with a URL to a Category ...
